Curavisc®

CuraviscOsteoarthritis (OA - degenerative joint disease) is the most common form of arthritis and an important cause of disability of populations. It has been reported that more than 90% of people over the age of 65 will have radiological signs of OA at least of one joint involved. 12% of radiologically diagnosed people have occasional or manifest clinical signs, characterized by pain and increasing disability. OA is primarily a degenerative disease of the cartilage of the joints, but it also involves other tissues like synovium and bone. The main characteristics are the slow degradation of cartilage, synovial fibrosis, sclerosis of the subchondral bone and osteophyte formation at the joint margins.

Joints are like gears – they work best if they’re well lubricated. In a healthy joint, a thick substance called synovial fluid provides lubrication, allowing bones to glide against one another. Synovial fluid acts as a shock absorber, too. In people with osteoarthritis, a critical substance in synovial fluid known as hyaluronic acid breaks down. Loss of hyaluronic acid appears to contribute to joint pain and stiffness.

Curavisc is a natural Hyaloronic acid manufactured by fermentation. Curavisc increases the lubrication and shock absorbing function through viscosupplementation with an optimized size of molecules. Curavisc is easy to inject with a ready to use syringe containing 2.0 ml of a sterile solution.

The patient benefit: Curavisc reduces pain and improves joint mobility through viscosupplemetation and positive influence on the synovial metabolism.

Indication: Pain and disturbed function in degenerative and traumatic disease of the knee and other joints in the case of osteoarthritis.

Side of effects: Local secondary phenomena, such as pain, feeling of heat, and redness of the skin (flush) and swelling rarely may occur in joint treated Curavisc. Application of an ice pack for 5 to 10 minutes on to the treated joint will reduce the occurrence of these events.

Intractions with other products: No information on the incompatibility of Curavisc with other solutions for intra articular use is available to date.

Dosage & administration: Curavisc is injected to the affected joint once a week for a minimum of 3 up to a total of 5 injections. Several joints may be treated at the same time. Depending on the severity of joint disease the beneficial effects of a treatment cycle of 5 intra articular injections will last up to months. The effectiveness of a single treatment cycle of ness than 3 injections has not been established. Repeated treatment cycle may be administrated as required at interval of not less than 6 months.
